Excited for HvZ - Quick Teaser for the upcoming 2 week game

The Director of the New Hope Security Forces sighed as he look over the massive amounts of paperwork that had been piling up over the past several weeks. He had never been a fan of paperwork, it got in the way of doing what he was promoted to do: protecting the city of New Hope, one of the last bastions of humanity, from the ravaging horde of undead that now ruled the planet.
At first, it had been easy: instruct the soldiers to aim for the head, be slow and methodical. And this had worked, and for a good long while, he had slowly been regaining ground for the city. It seemed as though they were going to survive until the zombies just rotted away, or one of the now-crippled governments of the old world managed to start taking back the globe for humanity.
Several months ago, things had changed. A famous research doctor, Elias Mercer, was sent to a small town in the northern wilds called Prudence. Here, a new strain of the virus was discovered that changed everything. A new breed of Zed was born. They were faster, almost impossible to kill, and, whenever he heard this, the Security Director had almost killed himself right then and there… they were intelligent. No longer were they fighting a horde of brainless corpses, they were now fighting intelligent, almost indestructible monsters. The only positive was that the zombies were short-lived as the virus set their metabolism on overdrive and after a few days, the zombies would almost literally, eat themselves.
The Robin Foundation sent in its most experienced soldiers to find Dr. Mercer and to put an end to this new threat. As reports came in to the Director, his blood froze. After the first week, the CEOs of the Robin Foundation were discovered dead and Dr. Mercer was seen arriving and leaving the building around the time of their deaths. On top of that, after only two weeks of deployment in that damned town, all the soldiers were massacred and risen as these new undead.
For a short while, there was no news of these super zombies anywhere. A couple of weeks had passed, and everything seemed to be safe and sound. That was, until the city-state of Cadance went quiet. After attempting to reestablish connection without success, the Director managed to get one of the few choppers left in New Hope for a recon mission to Cadance. To his horror, it was entirely destroyed. Fires raged amongst what few structures remained standing, and there was no sign of the citizenry nor of the culprits.
This was the start of a pattern where a city-state would fall out of contact only to be found ravaged and abandoned. They had finally caught a break in the town of Luin where some of the security footage from around the area was still intact in the collapsed security center. What they saw confirmed everyone’s worst fears. Dr. Mercer was still alive and leading the horde of zombies, toppling city-state after city-state.
The Director sighed and went to look over the city of New Hope, the last safe haven of humanity. The city had prospered in the wake of the zombie apocalypse, had risen into a shining example of human tenacity, dedication and survival. Dr. Mercer was on his way here, and it was the Director’s job to stop him and kill him. Walking back to his desk, the Director looked at one paper in particular with the emblem of the phoenix on it. He did not want to sign it, but the motto of the Security Forces rang in his mind, “Protecting humanity, no matter the cost.†With a moment of hesitation, he picked up a pen and signed it, hoping that he had not just damned the last remnants of humanity.
